I spoke with Joanne, a senior who uses compression socks, which are tight stockings designed to reduce the painful swelling caused by edema. She shared that these specialized socks are very difficult to put on, especially with her arthritis, which causes her significant discomfort and stress every morning before she can even get out of bed.

Current Market

Design

After diving into user research, online studies, and market analysis, I focused on deeply understanding their challenges. My goal was to design solutions that create lasting improvements in their daily lives and experiences.

Initial Prototypes

FinalPresentationV2_NoTextVersion7.jpg

This initial prototype featured pull-up straps designed to roll up into the sock, large easy-grip handles for pulling, and soft TPU roll supports at the ends to help unroll the sock smoothly up the foot and leg.

Challenges

Hard on hands
Hard to guide onto feet

This initial prototype for the sock aid project modifies a crutch to help users put on socks. The design includes a swiveling head to hold the sock, allowing it to slide smoothly onto the foot.

Challenges

Hard to maneuver
Varied leg size/swelling
Hard on hands

After further research and surveys highlighted fit issues, I redesigned the sock with adjustable tightening points and an easy pull-over handle. These changes were intended to provide a customizable fit and improve usability, accommodating a wider range of users in theory.

Challenges

Thick
Overly complicated

FinalPresentationV2_NoTextVersion9.jpg

Looking to make a better zipper-sock and pull up to reduce complication, I looked at something that could help leverage a user ability to pull up the zipper of socks on the market while also improving upon zipper socks on the market.

Challenges

Awkward pull handle
Pull arm too short

FinalPresentationV2_NoTextVersion10.jpg

Building on the idea of a pull system that leverages user strength, I refined the pulling mechanism to simplify motion and improve usability. This concept was then integrated into a zipper sock design, combining innovative functionality with a new zipper option or addressing  limitations of existing options.
